Sharks vs Knights Preview & Prediction

The Sharks go in search of their third straight win when they play host to the Knights at PointsBet Stadium on Friday night.

After falling to the Raiders in the nation’s capital in Round 1, the Sharks have bounced back strongly with back-to-back victories over the Eels and Dragons to move into the top four for the first time since 2019.

Nicho Hynes has slotted in superbly at halfback, kicking the match-winning conversion after the siren to beat the Eels, while he was again electric in the 36-12 victory over the Dragons last week, scoring a try and booting seven goals.

Matt Moylan is providing a great supporting role at five-eighth, and on the back of a strong forward back and speedy outside backs, the Sharks are looking like the real deal in 2022. Craig Fitzgibbon has got to be happy in his first three games as an NRL head coach.

Meanwhile, the Knights came crashing back down to earth last week in Bathurst, going down 38-20 to the Panthers after Mitch Barnett got sent off for a wild elbow off the ball.

It’s a huge setback for the Knights, who had won their first two games by 13+ margins over the Roosters and Tigers and were challenging for the upset against the Panthers until they were reduced to 12 men.

With a tricky trip to the Shire coming up, that send off has the potential to derail Newcastle’s early-season momentum. Importantly for them, Kalyn Ponga is set to return from a knee injury.

VERDICT:

The Knights are decent value here, but we think last week could be a real kick in the guts for them moving forward.

Cronulla have been sensational in their last two games and following strong defence against the Eels, their attack well and truly clicked into gear against the Dragons last week.

Newcastle’s defence has been good, so we’re not expecting a blow-out here, but the Sharks have got the edge at home (Best Sharks 1-12 margin odds $3.00 with bet365.)
