Cowboys vs Raiders Preview and Prediction

Canberra are in desperate need of two points if they want to remain in immediate top four conversations when they head north to face the Cowboys on Saturday night.

It’s been a poor last fortnight for the Raiders – they’ve conceded 11 tries in 20 and 25 point defeats to the Panthers and Eels respectively, scoring just one try in the second half of those fixtures, which indicates they are tiring in the latter stages.

Penrith and Parramatta are two of the top premiership contenders, but Canberra want to be spoken about in the same sentence and they were comprehensively outplayed, with the Eels scoring their first win in the nation’s capital since 2006.

The Raiders head into this one as strong favourites, but they were short odds the last time they faced the Cowboys in Townsville in 2020 and only prevailed 14-12. The Green Machine will have to be on guard, especially with North Queensland having won back-to-back matches for the first time since Round 3 last season.

The Cowboys have defeated the Tigers and Bulldogs over the last fortnight – two of the weaker sides in the competition, but confidence-boosting victories nonetheless.

North Queensland scored 30+ points in both of those wins, but they also conceded 30 against the Tigers and 18 against a woeful Bulldogs attack that was reduced to 10 men. The Cowboys’ defence is a work in progress and I think we can expect a high-scoring game here as a result.

I’m willing to back the Cowboys with a 9.5 head start, but think the Raiders will tough this one out in a tight one. North Queensland still haven’t proven they have what it takes to beat a top eight side, while the Raiders are desperate. It shouldn’t be a blowout, but Canberra should just edge it.

The Cowboys have named the same 17 that took care of the Bulldogs, with Jason Taumalolo still a week away from returning.

Josh Hodgson is out with a calf injury in a huge blow for the Raiders, replaced by Tom Starling at hooker, while Ryan James returns at prop. Corey Harawira-Naera and Corey Horsburgh also play their first games of the season.
