Here are the latest happenings in the NRL at the end of week one of the finals.
1. Panthers Thump the Roosters 30-10
The Panthers put the rest of the NRL on notice with a flawless first half against the Roosters. Penrith absolutely battered the Chooks in the opening 40 minutes and were up 24-0 at the half-time break.
The Roosters mounted a comeback thanks to tries from Sua’ali’i and Tedesco within the first 10 minutes of the second half. However, a very flat pass from Tupou to Tedesco was controversially called forward by the ref. Ultimately, the Panthers prevailed, and Cleary had a belter, his kicking game was electric, leading to multiple tries.
2. Cowboys Too Strong For the Knights 28-16
The Knights played a great first half of footy, scoring two tries and going into the half-time break up 12-6. However, it all fell apart for Ponga and his side as the Cowboys found their form and ran in four tries to one. The Cowboys will play the Sharks on Friday night.
3. Storm Dispatch of the Sharks 37-10
A lot of pundits were predicting the Sharks to upset the Storm due to Melbourne’s lengthy breaks and a few injury problems. However, the Storm delivered a clinical performance, scoring six tries and keeping the high-flying Sharks scoreless in the second half. The Sharks only had 41% of possession and had no answer for the Storm, who completed 95% of sets.
4. Bulldogs Crumble Against Manly, Losing 24-22
The Bulldogs got off to a great start thanks to a try from Kiraz, but then Talau responded for Manly by diving in the corner and somersaulting to avoid the touchline. Canterbury were dominating the first half, keeping Manly trapped in their own territory, but too many penalties kept the Sea Eagles in the game.
Going into the second half, the Bulldogs were up 16-12, and Skelton ended the lead with a try in the 46th minute. However, again, penalties and errors came home to bite the Doggies as Cherry-Evans strolled over the line untouched.
Then, with just eight minutes to go, Koula scored, giving Manly its first lead of the match. Burton had a great chance to level the match with a two-point drop goal, but it just dropped short!
