Eels vs Dragons Preview and Prediction

Parramatta aim to extend their unbeaten start to the season and maintain a top two spot on the ladder when they face the Dragons to conclude NRL Round 5 action on Sunday night.

It’s shaping as a cracking contest – the Eels have won their first four games of the season and always lift at Bankwest, while the Dragons have surprised everyone, winning their last three matches.

However, this is a considerable step up in class for the Dragons, who have defeated the woeful Dragons and Sea Eagles before preying on a depleted Knights team last week.

In saying that, I’ve been impressed with the Dragons performances so far this year. Matt Dufty is as electric as ever, Andrew McCullough has proven to be a tremendous recruit, while enigmas like Jack Bird and Corey Norman have been solid.

At their best, the Dragons should be challenging for the top eight and not fighting to avoid the wooden spoon. So far it’s the former, but how long will this form last?

Meanwhile, the Eels have answered all challenges so far this season – they recovered from 16 points down against the Broncos in their opener, conquered reigning premiers Melbourne, eased past the Sharks and held strong to hold off the Tigers on Easter Monday.

Returning to Bankwest, the Eels should be coming out on top here, but the Dragons did prevail at this venue by two points last year – and in their current form, they can keep this clash close.

Ryan Matterson is set to return for the Eels from concussion and Bryce Cartwright will make his club debut off the bench, with Keegan Hipgrave and Ray Stone making way.
