Panthers vs Knights Preview and Prediction

It’s been a flawless start to the season for the Panthers and last year’s grand finalists will be aiming to go 7-0 when they entertain the Knights on Thursday night.

Penrith are on a 12-match winning streak at home and have been superb on their own turf this season, conceding just 6.33 points on average. They’ve won six of their last eight at BlueBet Stadium by 13+ margins, including a 20-point victory over Canberra a fortnight ago.

The Panthers found the going tougher than expected up at Suncorp against the Broncos last week, but Nathan Cleary saved the day in the final 10 minutes, bagging himself an eight-point haul that included a two-point field goal, try and conversion to guide his side to a 20-12 win.

Penrith still haven’t conceded more than 12 points in a game across the first six rounds and they will be targeting another strong defensive performance to get the better of the Knights.

Newcastle snapped a three-match losing streak in thrilling circumstances last week, prevailing 26-22 over the Sharks.

Kalyn Ponga was the hero for the Knights. The electric fullback scored two tries, set up two more, made a pair of line breaks, eight tackle busts and ran for 172 metres – and he did it all while battling a gastro illness.

Ponga has now scored at least one try in both his games this season since returning from injury and if the Knights are to stand any chance of the upset here, they will need him to be firing on all cylinders again.

However, I can’t see Newcastle coming close here. They have a poor recent away record, winning just two of their last seven as an outsider, while their overall style is far too erratic and consistent to trouble the Panthers.

Penrith are almost unbeatable at home and they should cruise to another comfortable victory on Thursday night.
