It’s been smooth sailing as expected for Australia as the defending World Cup champions aim to return to the semi-finals on Friday night when they tackle Lebanon at John Smith’s Stadium.

The Kangaroos have been supremely dominant in the group stages, finishing with a points differential of 178 after scoring 192 points and leaking just 14.

Australia crushed Fiji 42-8, Scotland 84-0 and Italy 66-6 to finish top of the group and set up this quarter-final clash with Lebanon.

Mal Meninga has had the luxury of rotating his team throughout the competition and has opted for Daly Cherry-Evans at halfback over Nathan Cleary for this encounter.

Josh Addo-Carr has continued his rich vein of try-scoring form, scoring six tries in his two appearances so far, while Campbell Graham has also been prolific, scoring five tries in two matches. Both have been named to start this game.

Meanwhile, Lebanon are into the World Cup quarter-finals for the second straight tournament after finishing second behind New Zealand in their group.

Lebanon put up a great fight in a 34-12 loss to the Kiwis before beating Ireland 32-14 and steamrolling Jamaica 74-12 to earn their ticket to the last eight.

Mitch Moses is leading the way in the halves, while veteran Josh Mansour is having fun on the wing, scion four tries in two games.

VERDICT:

Lebanon have been relatively impressive so far this tournament, but of course their run comes to an end here – the question, as usual, is by how much?
