Australia vs New Zealand Preview & Prediction
Australia and New Zealand renew their rivalry with a spot in the World Cup final on the line at Elland Road on Friday night.
It will be the first World Cup meeting between the two nations since 2013, when the Kangaroos ran out comfortable 34-2 winners.
However, New Zealand scored the biggest win in their history five years earlier, stunning Australia 34-20 in the 2008 World Cup final in Brisbane.
However, the Kiwis are going to need considerable improvement if they are to repeat that extraordinary triumph in Leeds.
New Zealand have been far from their best all tournament – they were pushed by Lebanon in their opening match and were almost knocked out by Fiji in the quarter-finals last weekend.
The Kiwis trailed 12-6 at the break and only took the lead in the final 10 minutes, with Jordan Rapana slotting home a penalty goal before crossing for the match-sealing try.
Joey Manu continues to impress and ran for a staggering 348 metres, but there’s injury concerns surrounding halfback Jahrome Hughes, who has been battling an arm injury.
Meanwhile, Australia have been untroubled throughout the World Cup and are coming off a dominant 48-4 victory over Lebanon in the quarter-finals.
Josh Addo-Carr is having a dream tournament and crossed for five tries in that win, taking his World Cup tally to 11 from four games.
Nathan Cleary looks to have taken over from Daly Cherry-Evans as the team’s chief playmaker, supported by Cameron Munster in the halves, while James Tedesco remains electric at fullback.
VERDICT:
I liked New Zealand’s odds at the start of the tournament and thought they could perhaps upset Australia in the semis.
However, I’ve changed my tune after watching their first four games. The Kiwis just aren’t clicking and Hughes carrying a niggling arm injury can’t be helping matters.
Australia are looking slick and have plenty of points in them. They’ve warmed up perfectly for this clash and could explode in Leeds. Backing the Kangaroos home by a 13+ margin (Best Australia 13+ odds $1.90 with Ladbrokes.)
