Australia vs Scotland Preview & Prediction
Australia will settle for nothing short of an absolutely dominant win over Scotland when the two nations meet in Group B action on Friday night in Coventry.
The Kangaroos were untroubled in a 42-8 victory over Fiji in the opening match of their World Cup title defence, but it was far from a polished performance and they will be hoping to be more ruthless here.
Mal Meaning has made mass changes for this clash, including naming six debutants in Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, Liam Martin, Matt Burton, Campbell Graham and Lindsay Collins.
Cleary gets his chance to impress at halfback after incumbent Daly Cherry-Evans was given the nod in the opener, mostly due to his combination with other Queenslanders in the squad, including Cameron Munster, Harry Grant and Ben Hunt.
Grant was arguably the best player on the field during the Fiji victory and he gets his chance in the starting side for this game.
Meanwhile, Scotland were disappointing and far from competitive in a 28-4 loss to Italy in their tournament opener.
Scotland failed to win a single game at the last World Cup and having failed to beat Italy, they look like doing so again here. Euan Aitken was the only NRL player to feature for Scotland against Italy and it goes without saying they are heavily outclassed coming up against the Kangaroos.
VERDICT:
Anything other than Australia winning by at least 50 would be a seismic shock. The line is set at 64.5 at the time of writing, but we’ll play it a bit safer and back Australia home by 60+. We also wouldn’t be surprised to see the Kangaroos keep Scotland try-less, considering the Bravehearts could only manage one against Italy (Best Australia -60.5 line odds $1.65 with Ladbrokes.)
