Tonga will be searching for a more polished and emphatic performance after a shaky win over Papua New Guinea in their tournament opener.

Coming into the World Cup as the second-ranked nation in the world following a brilliant upset of Australia before the pandemic struck, Tonga are carrying a lot of expectations in England.

Perhaps the pressure is taking its toll, because Tonga were far from convincing in their tight victory over the Kumuls last week.

Tonga and Papua New Guinea were locked at 18-18 with just three minutes remaining before Souths forward Keaon Koloamatangi scored off a messy fifth-tackle play.

Tonga also fell behind early in that game, so they have a lot of improvement to do if they are to challenge the likes of Australia, New Zealand and England for the silverware.

Meanwhile, Wales were competitive in a 18-12 loss to an experienced Cook Islands game and they should take plenty of confidence from that performance into this clash.

VERDICT:

Obviously Tonga wins this fairly comfortably, but can they cover the 45.5 line set for this clash? We have our doubts.

Tonga looked disjointed against the Kumuls and we’re not sure whether their halves pairing of Amone and Lolohea have the experience or composure to put say 50 points on the board here.
