Dragons vs Panthers Preview & Prediction

The Panthers made a statement of intent last week against Manly – can they double down when they meet the Dragons on Friday night at Jubilee Stadium?

With Nathan Cleary sidelined, many believed the Panthers would struggle in their opening round against the Sea Eagles, but that couldn’t have been further from the case, with Penrith producing a masterclass to emerge triumphant by a clinical 28-6 scoreline.

Sean O’Sullivan slotted in seamlessly into the halfback role, but it was the intensity and relentlessness of the Panthers’ defence that gave the halves and backs space to work their magic.

Isaah Yeo has cemented himself as one of the best forwards in the world and Jarome Luai was at his energetic best as he partnered O’Sullivan in the halves.

Meanwhile, the Dragons also registered an opening round win, downing the Warriors 28-16 on the Sunshine Coast.

Mikaele Ravalawa was the main man for the Dragons as the flying winger crossed for a hat-trick of tries.

It was a confidence-boosting win for the Dragons, especially after their horror run to end 2021, but they will need considerable improvement to break a four-game losing run to the Panthers.

VERDICT:

Penrith were near-flawless last week and if they repeat that performance, there will be nothing the Dragons can do.

There’s not much value in backing the Panthers outright, but we do like the total points market. Penrith’s defence is the best in the competition and they only conceded six points last week – and that was a runaway try right on half-time.

Penrith’s last five games have gone under the total points line, with their last seven (including trials) producing under 43.5 points (Best Under 43.5 total points odds $1.91 with bet365.)
