Penrith Panthers vs St George Illawarra Dragons Preview & Prediction

The Panthers are looking to cement their position at the top of the table when they host the struggling Dragons on Sunday night at BlueBet Stadium.

Penrith have won 30 of their last 33 games at BlueBet Stadium, while they are on a five-game winning streak against the Dragons, who have lost all seven of their away games in 2023.

Should be pretty straightforward stuff for the Panthers, but a lot does also depend on how many of their Origin stars back up after Wednesday night.

Many of the Panthers players came under criticism for their performance in Origin 1, with Nathan Cleary copping most of it. Remains to be seen if he’s rested or Dad Ivan throws him into battle in an attempt to rediscover his mojo.

The Dragons have predictably been a basket case of a club this season, coming into this encounter with seven defeats from their last eight games and dead last on the ladder.

Anthony Griffin is gone, but it’s unlikely to change anything from a club that needs a complete overhaul. Whether Ben Hunt backs up from Origin is crucial to the Dragons even keeping this game close.

VERDICT:

A lot does depend on how many of the Panthers stars play after Origin. If they all do, they win this by plenty. If they don’t, then it could be closer.

We’ll stick back the Panthers’ defence to be on song – they’ve conceded just 14 points in their last there games, while their attack has also struggled, so backing a low-scoring win for the hosts on Sunday night (Best Panthers win & Under 46.5 points odds $1.60 with bet365.)
