Catalans Dragons vs St Helens Preview & Prediction

On the brink of relegation just four years ago, Catalans Dragons are now one win away from Super League glory when they square off against juggernauts St Helens in the Grand Final on Saturday night.

Catalans are the ninth team to play in a Super League Grand Final and will be aiming to become just the first debutant side to win the Grand Final since 2004 when Leeds defeated Bradford.

Meanwhile, St Helens are hoping to join Leeds as the only club to have won three straight Super League Grand Finals after going back-to-back in 2019 and 2020.

St Helens will also be looking to emulate Leeds by winning a record eight Super League Grand Finals.

Veteran hooker James Roby has all the experience for St Helens – the 35-year-old will be contesting his 10th Grand Final, all of which have been for the Saints. Roby has won four and lost five premiership deciders.

Former NRL favourite James Maloney is also striving for his own piece of individual history – no player has ever won the NRL Grand Final with two separate clubs before going on to claim Super League silverware.

Maloney is a natural-born winner – he made every NRL club he signed for better and has led Catalans to their first Super League Grand Final this season.

All things considered, this has all the makings of a thrilling Grand Final.

Catalans have won two of the three encounters between the clubs this season, with both of those games decided by four points or less.

Catalans advanced into the Grand Final with a 28-10 win over Hull KR last week, with Maloney kicking four conversions, while St Helens crushed Leeds 36-8 as Regan Grace and Mark Percival both crossed for a double.

VERDICT:

Five of the last seven Super League Grand Finals have been decided by a 1-12 margin and we expect this to be another tight affair.

Catalans finished the regular season top of the ladder and defeated St Helens twice this season. If we do indeed see a low-scoring game, the Dragons at +7.5 looks great value at $1.96 with Ladbrokes.

However, St Helens have all the experience and their defence is always rock solid in big games, while they’ve kept opponents to single digits in three of their last five wins. St Helens have also restricted teams to six points or less in their last three Grand Final appearances.

We’re backing Catalans to push the two-time reigning champions all the way, but defence wins big games, so St Helens in the 1-12 margin market at $3.00 looks decent value with Sportsbet.

Catalans Dragons vs St Helens Team News

St Helens forward Morgan Knowles is free to play despite being charged for a high tackle in last week’s semi-finals, while Matty Lees, Tommy Makinson and Sione Mata’utia have also been cleared for the Grand Final.

No injury worries or suspension concerns for Catalans who are set to name the same team that took care of Hull KR last week.
