Raiders vs Roosters Preview and Prediction

The final round of the regular season kicks off with a bang in Mackay on Thursday night as the Raiders and Roosters battle it out, with both teams needing a win to keep their respective top eight and four hopes alive.

Canberra simply must win if they are any chance to feature in the finals, while they also need the Sharks to lose to Melbourne on Friday night.

Meanwhile, the Roosters will almost certainly miss out on the top four, but they can still make it if they win this clash and the Eels and Sea Eagles each lose.

The Raiders have been involved in some nail-biting games as of late, with their last six being decided by 1-12 margins.

However, it appears as if falling 19-18 to Manly – who were missing Tom Trbojevic – might come back to haunt them. Canberra have also lost six games this season by 1-12 margins – winning just one of them would see the team in the eight heading into this week.

The Roosters have soldiered on bravely all season after losing several key players to injury – and it got even worse last week, with Joey Manu ruled out for the year after requiring facial surgery following a brutal hit by Latrell Mitchell.

Mitchell has subsequently been suspended for the remainder of the season following that spiteful clash, which the Roosters lost 54-12.

The scoreline blew out in the final 15 minutes, but the Roosters have won seven of their last 10 games following a loss and have won their last eight straight against teams below them on the ladder.

VERDICT:

It’s that dominant record against teams outside the top four that sees us lean with the Roosters to edge this clash.

Canberra have also lost several close games this season, while nine of the last 10 meetings between these teams have been decided by eight points or less, so we’ll be having something extra on the Roosters 1-12.

But for our best bet, we’ll be backing the Chooks home in a relatively low-scoring clash (Best Roosters win & Under 54.5 points odds $2.15 with Sportsbet).
