Wests Tigers vs Cowboys Preview & Prediction

The Cowboys will be aiming to cement their top four status when they come up against the Tigers to close out Magic Round on Sunday night at Suncorp.

North Queensland have been the surprise team so far in 2022 and enter Magic Round in third spot on the ladder with an impressive 6-3 record for the season so far.

Todd Payten’s side come into this clash on the back of a four-match winning streak that includes a massive 35-4 crushing of the Eels a fortnight ago.

Chad Townsend and Tom Dearden have combined superbly in the halves, the forward pack is being led by veteran Jason Taumalolo and young gun Jeremiah Nanai and the outside backs including Valentine Holmes and Kyle Feldt are looking dangerous.

If the Cowboys wanted to be counted as a genuine top four team, then these are the sorts of games they must win – but they need to be weary of a Tigers side who have taken the scalps of the Eels and Rabbitohs over the last month.

However, the Tigers have dipped off slightly from the euphoria of those two victories, losing their last two games to the Dragons and Sea Eagles.

With David Nofoaluma still out injured, the Tigers appear to be lacking some firepower out wide, but Ken Maumalo will be a key focus, with the winger scoring a try in eight of his last 10 games with his team as underdogs.

Jackson Hastings and Luke Brooks had a huge two weeks in the wins over the Eels and Rabbitohs, but it was always going to be a big ask for them to repeat those sorts of performances week in and week out.

VERDICT:

The Cowboys have scored 30+ points in three straight games for the first time since 2016, so their attack is firing on all cylinders at the moment.

North Queensland are also equipped with the third best defence in the league behind the Panthers and Storm with just 113 points conceded in their nine games, including leaking just one try in two of their last three games and keeping the Knights scoreless in the second half last week.

The Tigers will battle hard, but they likely won’t have the points in them to keep up with the Cowboys (Best Cowboys -8.5 line odds $1.91 with bet365.)
