Australia vs Argentina Tips, Prediction & Preview

It’s basically a dead rubber when the Wallabies and Pumas collide on Saturday night, but Australia coach Dave Rennie is building towards the World Cup and knows his side can’t afford to waste 80 minutes against one of the best sides in the world.

As far as winning the Tri Nations goes, Australia’s drought is set to continue. They would need to claim a win by a margin of 101 points or more to leapfrog the All Blacks, while Argentina have to win by over 93 points.

It’s been a series of what could have been for the Wallabies – they’ve beaten and drawn with the All Blacks, but at the same time, they’ve only won one of their last six matches dating back to last year’s World Cup.

Coming off that 24-22 win over New Zealand, the Wallabies were expected to carve up Argentina and propel themselves into the box seat for the Tri Nations trophy, but instead they slipped up and stumbled to a 15-15 draw in Newcastle a fortnight ago.

Meanwhile, Argentina have been rocked by an off-field scandal that has seen skipper Pablo Matera and teammates Guido Petti and Santiago Socino suspended for discriminatory and xenophobic comments.

The controversy has derailed the Puma’s excellent campaign following a shock 10-point victory over the All Blacks and the aforementioned draw with Australia. Argentina went on to lose 38-0 to New Zealand and now you get the feeling they will just be going through the motions on the back of the suspensions.

As a result, we’re backing the Wallabies to win this one in convincing fashion. Rennie will be determined for his side to make an impact and build some momentum to carry into next year.
