A-League 2021/22 Preview

The 2021/22 A-League season will be the 17th campaign of the competition since it was established in 2004. It begins on Friday November 19 and culminates with the Grand Final on May 28.

Melbourne City are the reigning champions having secured their maiden A-League premiership last season with a win over Sydney FC in the Grand Final.

City and Sydney FC are once again tipped to be among the leading contenders for the premiership this season.

City are equipped with Socceroos striker Jamie Maclaren, who was the Golden Boot winner last season with 22 goals, while the club also further boosted their attacking stocks with the signing of Maclaren’s Socceroos teammate Matthew Leckie.

Sydney FC have their tried and tested foreign contingent of Bobo, Adam Le Fondre, Milos Ninkovic and Kosta Barbarouses to help them return to the champions corner.

However, the biggest news from the off-season was Perth Glory’s signing of former Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool and England international striker Daniel Sturridge.

Still with plenty to offer at 32 years of age, Sturridge is arguably the A-League’s biggest signing since Alessandro Del Piero and Emile Heskey joined the competition back in 2012.

Perth are now blessed with one of the most dangerous attacks in the competition, with Sturridge set to link up with the likes of Bruno Fornaroli and Andy Keogh.

On the other side of the ladder, Melbourne Victory – normally a powerhouse of Australian football – will be hoping to bounce back from their terrible season in 2020/21, where they finished rock bottom with the wooden spoon.

Victory have bolstered their attacking options for this season with the signings of former Perth stars Chris Ikonomidis and Nick D’Agostino, while they have also secured the services of Italian striker Francesco Margiotta, who was on the books of Serie A giants Juventus between 2012-18.
