Western Sydney Wanderers and Brisbane Roar launch A-League football for the decade when they clash on New Year’s Day to begin Round 13 action.
It’s a must-win game for both sides as they look to keep pace with the top six, with the Wanderers high on confidence after snapping their winless run in dramatic fashion last week, beating Adelaide 3-2 away, while Brisbane grabbed a share of the spoils with a late goal at Newcastle.
Melbourne City and Western United will be aiming to bounce back from last-start defeats in Round 12 as they square off on Friday night at AAMI Park. City couldn’t take advantage of a 10-man Sydney FC outfit as they went down 2-1 on Sunday, while United were no match for Wellington in Ballarat, losing 3-1.
Wellington Phoenix look to continue their superb form when they face Central Coast Mariners at Westpac Stadium on Saturday. Phoenix are arguably the form team in the competition at the moment and are coming off a big win over Western United to stay in sixth spot, while the Mariners – who are still to play Perth on New Year’s Eve at the time of writing – will be hoping to maintain their positive form and start 2020 on a winning note.
Sydney FC returned to the winners circle with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over City on Sunday, and the reigning premiers will have another tough assignment on their hands on Saturday night at Jubilee Stadium against Adelaide, who will be determined to regain their best form after back-to-back defeats to the Mariners and Wanderers.
Round 13 action concludes at AAMI Park on Sunday night as Melbourne Victory play host to Newcastle Jets. Victory are coming off the bye as they attempt to break into the top six, while the Jets remain anchored to the bottom of the ladder following their 1-1 draw at home to Brisbane.
Perth Glory have the bye this round.
