A-League Round 23 Fixtures and Tips

Andrew Hendrie:

Runaway leaders Sydney FC square off against Perth Glory in a top four battle during A-League Round 23 action this weekend.

Sydney returned to their best form with a thumping 4-1 win over Melbourne Victory on Saturday, while Perth slipped to fourth on the back of a second straight defeat, falling 3-2 at home to Melbourne City. The game will be played on Saturday night at Jubilee Stadium.

Round 23 kicks off at Suncorp Stadium as Brisbane Roar play host to the struggling Central Coast Mariners on Friday. Brisbane continued their charge up the ladder with a 3-1 triumph over the Wanderers last week, while the Mariners slumped to another heavy defeat, this time at the hands of Wellington.

After conquering Perth, Melbourne City will be looking to lock down second spot on the ladder when they entertain Western Sydney Wanderers at AAMI Park on Saturday night. City bounced back to form with a strong performance in the west, while the Wanderers remain three points adrift of the finals after going down to Brisbane.

Melbourne Victory remain in do-or-die territory after their big loss to Sydney and have another tough clash on their hands on Sunday against the in-form Wellington Phoenix, who climbed into third place on the table following their win over the Mariners.

The weekend’s action draws to a close at Coopers Stadium on Sunday night as Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets collide. Adelaide are in a rough patch of form and slipped to seventh following their heavy 5-1 loss at home to Western United on Saturday, while the Jets – who had the bye in Round 22 – must win to keep their faint finals chances alive.

Western United have the bye this week.
