Sydney FC and Melbourne City collide in a blockbuster top-of-the-table showdown in the pick of the A-League Round 12 matches this weekend as the busy festive period continues.

Reigning premiers Sydney are six points clear of City at the top of the ladder, but they have struggled over the last fortnight by their high standards, battling to a 1-0 win over the Mariners before being held to a 2-2 draw across the ditch against Wellington. City meanwhile are still as inconsistent as ever, playing their best game of the season to beat Newcastle 4-0 two weeks ago, before falling 2-1 to Melbourne Victory in Saturday’s derby. The game takes place on Sunday night at Jubilee Stadium.

Adelaide United and Western Sydney Wanderers square off on Friday night to launch Round 12 action. The Wanderers are still winless since their Round 3 win over Sydney, drawing 1-1 with Western United last week, while Adelaide suffered a surprising defeat away to Central Coast.

Still sitting nicely in third spot on the ladder, Western United plays host to Wellington Phoenix at Mars Stadium in the first game on Saturday. Wellington have been one of the form teams in the competition after going winless in their first four matches and were impressive in their 2-2 draw with Sydney on the weekend to rise into the top six.

Newcastle Jets are approaching panic stations as they head into their Saturday night clash with Brisbane Roar at McDonald Jones Stadium. Ernie Merrick’s side have conceded 10 goals in their last two games and head into this encounter on the back of a 6-2 loss away to Perth, which saw them fall to last place on the ladder. Brisbane aren’t faring much better in 10th and are coming off the bye last week.

Round 12 concludes with the traditional New Year’s Eve contest in Gosford between Central Coast Mariners and Perth Glory. Both sides are coming off confidence-boosting victories from last round, with the Mariners upsetting Adelaide 2-1 at home and Perth thumping Newcastle by the aforementioned 6-2 scoreline.
