They may be nine points ahead of Newcastle on the ladder, but Adelaide are very much underdogs in my eyes for this encounter.

It’s been a horror last month or so for the Reds – they’ve lost four of their last five matches and have slipped to seventh spot on the ladder as a result.

Adelaide head into this showdown on the back of an embarrassing 5-1 defeat at home to Western United last week and are scrambling to recapture their best form before it’s too late.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are making a late charge for the finals, although they may have left their run a little too late with just six games remaining and trailing sixth spot by nine points.

In saying that, the Jets are unbeaten in their last five games and are thriving under the tutelage of new coach Carl Robinson, who has bolstered the squad with the arrivals of Bernie Ibini and Joe Ledley.

Newcastle’s last match resulted in a brilliant 2-1 win over Perth before last week’s bye. With Adelaide in dire form, the Jets have a fantastic chance to keep their faint finals hopes alive on Sunday.
