Match Preview
It’s fifth up against seventh with the winner to secure a spot in the top six as Adelaide United and Western United collide on Saturday afternoon.
Following on from the Round 22 opener between Brisbane and Western Sydney, it’s the second match in succession with massive finals implications.
Adelaide had their sights set on a potential top two finish just a couple of weeks ago after winning four of their last five meetings, but back-to-back defeats over the last fortnight have sent them crashing back down the ladder.
Currently occupying fifth spot, Adelaide are just three points ahead of seventh-placed Western United – but also just a win away from third-placed Perth.
There’s no room for error for either side as the race for a top six place starts to heat up over the back-end of the campaign.
Western United were sitting pretty in the top six for most of the season, but a shocking February in which they failed to score a single goal saw them take a tumble down the table.
However, Mark Rudan’s side returned to form with a bang last weekend, demolishing last-placed Central Coast by a rampant 6-2 scoreline, with Max Burgess bagging a hat-trick and Besart Berisha netting a double.
More goals could be on the cards on Saturday after Adelaide prevailed 4-3 in their last meeting back in January. It’s a crucial showdown for both sides – and the odds on offer for Western are certainly tempting…
