Match Preview
Two in-form sides square off in an impromptu Round 24 fixture on Friday night as Brisbane and Newcastle look to maintain their winning momentum.
This encounter was originally scheduled for Round 27, but was brought up to this weekend due to Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne Victory forced into a 14-day quarantine period due to new travel policies surrounding the coronavirus.
Instead of sitting the weekend out, the Jets and Roar will face off and both teams will be determined to make it three victories on the bounce.
Brisbane have been one of the form teams in the competition since 2020 started and have won four of their last six games to surge into fourth spot on the ladder.
Last week wasn’t pretty, but Robbie Fowler’s side got the job done 1-0 against the bottom-placed Central Coast Mariners, lifting them above Perth Glory on the ladder.
Meanwhile, the Jets may have left their run a bit too late, but they are unbeaten in their last six games and are playing significantly better since the arrival of new coach Carl Robinson.
After beating Perth 2-1 a few weeks ago, Newcastle continued their brilliant form with a dominant 3-0 dispatch of Adelaide away from home last week coming off the bye.
The Jets can actually come within three points of a finals spot if they can take out Brisbane on Friday night. Newcastle are unbeaten against the Roar in their last seven meetings, but this is a different Brisbane side at the moment. With both teams playing well, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a share of the spoils.
