Melbourne City look to condemn Central Coast Mariners to their equal-worst losing streak when the two sides clash in A-League Round 24 action on Friday night.
Mariners vs City kicks off at 7.30pm AEDT at Central Coast Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.
The season is over for the Mariners, but they still have their pride to play for as they attempt to snap a nine-match losing streak on Friday night.
It’s been another nightmare campaign for Central Coast, who after a promising start to the season, have gone winless over the last two months and are all but certain to pick up another wooden spoon.
A tenth straight defeat would equal their worst ever run in the A-League and the second-longest ever in the competition, with New Zealand Knights (11 in 2005) the only team to have lost more consecutive fixtures.
After going down 1-0 to Brisbane last week, the Mariners now trail 10th-placed Melbourne Victory by seven points heading into this encounter.
Meanwhile, City are sitting pretty in second spot on the ladder and have seemingly overcome their mid-season slump, coming into this clash on a three-match unbeaten run.
That streak has included wins over finals-bound sides Perth and Brisbane, while they drew 1-1 with a desperate Wanderers outfit last week.
This is a game City need to win comfortably if they want to be a genuine threat in the upcoming finals series, and if they can handle the behind-closed-doors aspect of this match, they should take all three points.
Melbourne City – $1.60
Central Coast Mariners – $5.40
Draw – $4.20
– City unbeaten in 12 of their last 13 matches vs Mariners
– City have won nine of those meetings
– Mariners trying to avoid equal-worst losing streak in club’s history (10)
