Macarthur FC vs Central Coast Mariners Preview & Prediction
Two wins from two games and a place at the top of the ladder is on the line when Macarthur play host to Central Coast in Campbelltown on Sunday.
New boys Macarthur enjoyed a successful A-League debut on Wednesday night, conquering new rivals Western Sydney by a 1-0 scoreline.
In what as an entertaining affair, Macarthur were rewarded for their attacking pressure when Spanish recruit Benat Extebarria scored a deflected free-kick deep into the second half.
Adam Federici was the hero for the Bulls, with the former Reading goalkeeper making a number of world class saves to keep his side in the match.
Overall, it was a very solid outing for Macarthur and former La Liga midfielders Benat and Markel Susaeta are in line for a start against the Mariners after debuting off the bench.
Meanwhile, the Mariners also got their 2020/21 campaign off to a winning start, edging the Newcastle Jets 1-0 in the F3 derby on New Year’s Eve.
It was a largely dour affair, but Alou Kuol took advantage of a sluggish Newcastle defence to head home his debut goal in the A-League in the moments leading up to half-time and that strike was ultimately enough for the Mariners to take all three points.
It’s a confidence-boosting win for Central Coast, but they will need to improve considerably if they are to earn more success against the Bulls. Not helping matters is the fact their overseas signings Stefan Jankovic, Marcos Urena and Michal Janota are all still in hotel quarantine.
Macarthur looked the more dangerous side in their opening match, and at home and considering Central Coast’s awful away record, I’m backing the Bulls to make it a maximum six points from their first two games.
