Melbourne Victory and Newcastle Jets square off for the first time this season as the two sides look to start 2020 with a win at AAMI Park on Sunday night.
Victory vs Jets kicks off at 6.30pm AEDT at AAMI Park. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.
It’s been a tough season for Victory over the first three months, but they are showing signs of a resurgence heading into 2020.
Victory registered their best result of the season before last week’s bye when they conquered cross-town rivals Melbourne City by a 2-1 scoreline.
It remains to be seen whether that was an isolated moment of brilliance or the start of their climb into the top six, but one thing’s for certain – Victory can’t afford to drop more points to the competition’s bottom-placed team.
Ola Toivonen will again be the main man for Victory after scoring a brace in the win over City two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, the Jets appeared set for a mini-resurgence of their own earlier in the season, but they went on a horrible run of form through Round 9-11, losing three straight games and leaking 12 goals in the process.
Newcastle are lacking ideas in the final third, mostly due to the long-term injury sustained to Wes Hoolahan, while Panama international Abdiel Arroyo has also been sidelined.
The Jets should have got over the line at home to Brisbane last week, but they conceded late and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Ernie Merrick’s side will take confidence from their thrilling 3-2 win over Victory in the FFA Cup before the season started, but they aren’t playing at that level right now. Coming off their win over City and fresh from last week’s bye, anything other than a Victory win would be a surprise.
