Western United vs Newcastle Jets Preview & Prediction
Western United have the opportunity to propel themselves into the top six if they can defeat the last-placed Newcastle Jets on Monday night at AAMI Park.
United have been in great form over the last month and are unbeaten in four of their last five matches, winning three.
It all started with a fantastic come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Melbourne City, which snapped their seven-game winning streak in the process. United then went on to beat Newcastle 1-0 before suffering a last-minute 3-2 defeat to Wellington.
United bounced back strongly to defeat then-ladder leaders Central Coast before earning a share of the spoils in a rematch with Wellington on Thursday, drawing 1-1.
With the Wanderers losing to Melbourne Victory on Friday night, United will enter the top six if they take all three points in this clash.
Meanwhile, the Jets slumped to the bottom of the ladder after Victory’s aforementioned upset of the Wanderers and they don’t look like hauling themselves off it given their form over the last couple of months.
Newcastle are winless in their last nine matches and have lost seven of them – although they have drawn their last two against Perth and Macarthur.
The Jets are trying hard and the effort is there, but they simply don’t have the roster to compete with most teams in the A-League this season.
Newcastle aren’t having trouble scoring – they’ve found the back of the net in seven of their last nine, but obviously their defence is a major issue.
United beat the Jets just a few weeks ago and should double down on that victory at home on Monday night.
