Sydney FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers Preview & Prediction
Another blockbuster Sydney derby awaits at ANZ Stadium on Saturday afternoon as Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers battle for early-season supremacy.
Sydney will be playing their first match in a fortnight after opening their A-League title defence with a narrow 2-1 victory over the Wellington Phoenix.
It was a decent opening performance from the Sky Blues after returning home from the Asian Champions League with some solid results against quality opposition.
However, they were somewhat fortunate to come away with all three points – Calem Niewenhof and Luke Brattan both scored screamers from distance, while Wellington had a late strike ruled out due to offside.
Steve Corica will certainly be expecting a more polished performance in this one.
Meanwhile, the Wanderers are 1-1 for the season after playing an extra game than their rivals. Carl Robinson’s side opened their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to new boys Macarthur, but bounced back to topple the embattled Newcastle Jets 2-1 last week.
In saying that, it was a far from impressive display from the Wanderers, who were outplayed by the Jets for most of the game and especially in the second half. Their attack isn’t firing, with their two goals against Newcastle coming from defender Ziggy Gordon and fullback Tate Russell.
With the Wanderers struggling in the final third – they also failed to score in their opening match – I’m backing Sydney to edge this one and keep a clean sheet in the process.
