Melbourne City vs Western Sydney Wanderers Preview & Prediction
Despite sitting in fourth spot on the ladder, Melbourne City are the undisputed hottest team in the A-League right now and they will be aiming to register their sixth win on the bounce when they host the Wanderers on Friday night.
City’s winning streak started with a 3-2 triumph over reigning premiers Sydney FC on February 23 and has continued with four straight wins to nil, toppling the Wanderers 2-0, Victory 6-0, Macarthur 3-0 and league leaders Central Coast 2-0 in their last outing.
Jamie Maclaren has been on fire in his recent appearances, scoring 11 goals in his last eight matches, while he will relish coming up against the Wanderers having scored six goals in his last four games against the side.
Maclaren was once again on the scoresheet during City’s most recent win over the Mariners before defender Nathan Atkinson sealed the three points midway through the second half. City boss Patrick Kisnorbo would have been delighted that his team didn’t once stop attacking despite holding a comfortable lead.
Meanwhile, the Wanderers are on a nice run of their own, winning their last three matches heading into this clash.
Western Sydney have defeated Western United 1-0, Wellington 4-3 in a thriller and Perth Glory 3-0 over the last few weeks and have moved up to second spot on the ladder as a result.
Mitchell Duke has returned to some of his best form, scoring a long-range volley in the win over Wellington and grabbing a brace during the comfortable victory over Perth and his individual match-up with Maclaren will be one to watch.
The Wanderers have even more incentive in this clash as they have the opportunity to go top of the table if they win and the Mariners lose this weekend.
However, I can’t bet against City in this sort of form. Maclaren is banging in goals for fun and City haven’t conceded for four matches. At home and with a good recent record against the Wanderers, City are the deserved favourites to make it six wins on the trot.
