Match Preview

Don’t let their position on the ladder deceive you – Wellington are one of the A-League’s form teams and will be looking to continue their fine run of form against the Mariners on Friday night.

After going winless in their first four games of the season, Phoenix are now unbeaten in their last seven, producing one of the best performances of the campaign in their last outing as they defeated Western United 3-1 in Ballarat.

Mexican playmaker Ulises Davila was again the stand-out as he bagged himself a goal, while striker David Ball also got on the scoresheet.

Wellington have charged up the ladder from bottom to sixth over the last month and they will be confident of continuing that climb on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Mariners took a step backwards in their final game of 2019 on New Year’s Eve, barely threatening in a 3-0 loss at home to Perth.

Central Coast had turned a corner over the last fortnight as they played Sydney FC close in a 1-0 loss and beat Adelaide 2-1, but they came crashing back down to earth against Glory and now face a long trip across the ditch to face arguably the form team in the competition in their first clash of 2020.

Wellington have lost just one of their last seven A-league against Central Coast at home, and if they play like they have over the last two months, they should be coming away with the three points.
