Match Preview

Neither of these teams have been able to defeat the other three times in the regular season – can the Wanderers become the first on Friday night?

Sydney FC may be runaway competition leaders and firm favourites to defend their premiership, but they’ve lost both of their games this season against their cross-town rivals.

Indeed, the Sky Blues have only lost two of their 19 A-League fixtures in 2019/20 and they’ve both come against the Wanderers.

While Sydney are almost certainties for the Premiers Plate, 10 points clear of the second-placed Melbourne City, the Wanderers are in desperation stakes.

Western Sydney haven’t won since defeating Sydney 1-0 on February 28 and have slipped to eighth on the ladder as a result.

However, they are only two points behind Western United in sixth, but with as many as six teams currently jostling for what looks like the three last finals spots, there’s no room for error over the next month.

Sydney bounced back from their second derby defeat of the season with a comprehensive 4-1 triumph over Melbourne Victory, but they were held to a 0-0 stalemate with Perth last week.

The behind-closed-doors aspect of this match could be crucial – the Wanderers often rely on crowd support at Bankwest, and with no atmosphere, that should suit Sydney FC, who are simply the better football team.

It looms as the perfect opportunity for Steve Corica’s troops to avenge their last two derby losses and further increase their lead at the top of the table.
