Melbourne City vs Western United Preview & Prediction

City will be itching to get their season underway after last term’s nightmare Grand Final performance when they come up against Western United on Saturday.

Once again, City set the benchmark during the regular season, but they were ultimately crushed 6-1 in the Grand Final by the Mariners.

City are favourites again to reign supreme in the A-League, with Jamie Maclaren – who has scored 94 goals in 114 appearances for the club – taking over captaining duties.

Socceroos fullback Aziz Behich joins the club, along with the likes of Terry Antonio, Steve Ugarkovic and former Besiktas, Fenerbache and Udinese midfielder Tolgay Arslan, who is one of the marquee signings of the A-League this season.

Meanwhile, Western endured a disappointing campaign last season, finishing 26 points adrift of City, winning just nine games and conceding 47 goals.

Western have made some sneaky good signings however, bringing in former Socceroos striker Nikita Rukavytsya, while former Newcastle Jets midfielders Angus Thurgate and Daniel Penha link back up. James Donachie also boosts the backline, arriving from Sydney FC.

VERDICT:

Western could potentially surprise this season, but you can’t go past City in their opening game of the season.

Maclaren is absolutely lethal in the A-League and won’t have to back up after missing Socceroos selection, so the new captain should be fit and raring to go. City to open their season with their fourth straight win over Western (Best City win H2H odds $1.61 with bet365.)
