Match Preview

With their last win coming on December 13, United appear to be in a bit of a mid-season slump as they prepare to welcome a confident Mariners side to Geelong on Sunday.

Mark Rudan’s side had the bye last week after suffering back-to-back defeats against Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne City, with United dropping to fifth spot on the ladder as a result.

Another defeat on Sunday could see United fall out of the top six altogether, which would be a frustrating development given how well they started the season.

Can the A-League’s newest club return to the winners circle on Sunday, or will the Mariners continue their impressive form?

After two consecutive wooden spoon seasons, Central Coast are finally producing some football their long-suffering fans can cheer for this campaign.

They might be in 10th spot on the ladder, but Central Coast’s thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind win over Melbourne Victory last week means they are just two points off sixth spot – and a win over United will see them close the gap to just one point.

The Mariners won their only previous meeting 1-0 on November 24, while United are winless in their last four meetings against NSW opposition. It’s a tough one to pick – the Mariners did have a lot of luck last week, but United are in a slump. A share of the spoils could be on the cards here.
