Western Sydney Wanderers vs Western United Preview & Prediction
A crucial clash awaits both the Wanderers and Western United as the two sides continue their pursuit of the top six.
Western Sydney snapped a six-game winless run in style last weekend, toppling fierce rivals Sydney FC 3-2 in the derby.
Scott McDonald experienced a dream debut for the Wanderers, netting what ultimately was the late winner to hand his new side all three points.
It was a huge win for the Wanderers, who had lost back-to-back matches to Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar, along with three straight draws before that encounter.
Back at home, where they are unbeaten in four of their last five matches, the Wanderers will be out to extend their winning momentum on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, Western United missed a golden opportunity to enter the top six on Wednesday night when they lost 2-1 to Brisbane.
United went ahead in the opening half, but conceded in the 72nd and 94th minutes to come away with nothing. Even a draw would have seen United leapfrog Macarthur into sixth.
Fortunately for United, they still have a game in hand over both the Wanderers and Macarthur, but they won’t want to concede any further ground.
As a result, this is shaping as a very even contest. Both sides have seen their fair share of draws lately, with the Wanderers drawing three of their last six and United sharing the spoils in two of their last four – and it easily could have been three if not for that aforementioned 94th minute goal against Brisbane.
In such a big match for both sides, I’m backing a cagey affair with the Wanderers and United cancelling each other out in a low-scoring game.
