Australia vs Oman Preview & Prediction
The Socceroos look to make it three wins from three in this round of World Cup qualifying when they come up against Oman in Doha on Thursday night.
Australia are currently riding a record 10-match winning streak in 2022 World Cup qualifying – a run that started back in September 2019.
Graham Arnold’s side have scored a total of 32 goals during that period, but things should get tougher during this final round of qualifiers – especially with the nation forced to play outside of Australia due to the pandemic.
It’s been a perfect start to the Socceroos – they cruised past China 3-0 in their opening game before battling to a 1-0 away victory over a gallant Vietnam outfit.
Awer Mabil, Martin Boyle and Mitch Duke all got on the scoresheet in the win over China, while defender Rhyan Grant scored his first international goal in the victory over Vietnam in Hanoi.
Currently top of the group ahead of Saudi Arabia on goal difference, the Socceroos are looking good to qualify for their fifth straight World Cup.
Meanwhile, Oman have positioned themselves nicely for an unexpected tilt at qualifying after securing a shock 1-0 upset victory over Japan in their opening match.
It was one of Oman’s biggest victories in recent memory as Issam Al Sabhi fired home an 88th minute winner.
However, Oman couldn’t back that victory up with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia in their second qualifying match.
Nevertheless, new manager Branko Ivankovic has clearly got his team playing great football in defeating Japan away and pushing Saudi Arabia all the way.
VERDICT:
Oman will be tough for the Socceroos to break down on foreign soil, but Australia have won 10 matches on the trot and have the superior squad, so they should still find a way to dig this one out.
Australia have kept a clean sheet in eight of those 10 victories, and with Oman needing an 88th minute goal and failing to score against Saudi Arabia, they will be confident of producing another shut-out in this clash (Best Australia win to nil odds $2.10 with Ladbrokes.)
