England vs Socceroos Preview & Prediction
There’s no such thing as a friendly when England and Australia collide in any sporting arena and this promises to be no different as Wembley plays host to another blockbuster showdown between the two fierce rivals on Friday night.
This will be the first meeting between the nations since 2016, when England ran out 2-1 winners and Marcus Rashford became his country’s youngest ever goalscorer.
That victory was revenge for England after the Socceroos famously ran riot in a 3-1 upset back in 2003 at the now demolished Boleyn Ground, with Harry Kewell, Tony Popovic and Brett Emerton getting on the scoresheet.
England are deserved overwhelming favourites for this encounter, but it remains to be seen how Gareth Southgate lines up his team. If he decides to go all out, then Jude Bellingham and James Maddison have been two of the best players in the world to start this season.
Bellingham in particular has been on fire, scoring 10 goals in his first 10 games for Real Madrid, emulating Cristiano Ronaldo’s debut season – but the main difference being Bellingham is a central midfielder.
Maddison meanwhile has been a key figure in Tottenham’s revival under former Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou, scoring two goals and providing five assists as Spurs went into the international break top of the Premier League table.
Throw Harry Kane into the mix and the Socceroos are going to have a tough time at the back.
Graham Arnold’s side enjoyed a hugely successful World Cup relatively speaking, advancing out of the group with a big win over Denmark before almost forcing extra-time in a 2-1 defeat to eventual champions Argentina.
The Socceroos have played four matches since Qatar, winning just one and losing to Ecuador and Argentina, along with a recent 2-2 draw with Mexico.
Creativity from open play is still an area of concern for Australia, especially with in-form Middlesbrough attacker Riley McGree ruled out with injury.
Massimo Luongo – the hero of Australia’s triumphant Asian Cup campaign – gets a Socceroos recall for the first time in five years, while Jackson Irvine has also recovered from an achilles injury he picked up in the draw against Mexico.
VERDICT:
Tough to see the Socceroos getting the better of England here, particularly if Southgate fields a full-strength line-up.
Three of England’s last four wins have been to nil and it would have been all four if not for Harry Maguire’s own goal in the recent 3-1 victory over Scotland.
Given Australia can struggle in front of goal, another shut-out looks on the cards, while watch out for some more Maddison and Bellingham magic if they make it onto the field (Best England win to nil odds $1.72 with bet365.)
