Pohang Steelers vs FC Seoul K-League Tips: Friday May 22 (8.30pm AEST)
Two of the teams would be hoping to challenge Jeonbuk and Ulsan at the top of the ladder this season square off in the opening game of Round 3. Both teams have put together solid if unspectacular starts to the new campaign, with Pohang beating Busan 2-0 and drawing 1-1 with Daegu, while Seoul lost 3-1 to Gangwon before bouncing back to edge Gwangju 1-0 last week. Pohang are unbeaten in their last three matches against Seoul, but neither side have much momentum coming into this encounter. I can see another draw playing out here.
Gangwon FC vs Seongnam FC K-League Tips: Saturday May 23 (5.30pm AEST)
Seongnam have put together a solid start to the season, coming into this clash in fourth spot on the table with a win over over Gwangju FC and draw with Incheon, while they’ve yet to concede a goal across their first two games. Meanwhile, Gangwon has been up and down in their first two fixtures, coming from behind to beat Seoul 3-1 before slumping to a disappointing 2-0 loss last week to Sangju Sangmu. While Seongham haven’t had the toughest start to the season in terms of opponents, their odds here are too good to refuse.
Suwon Bluewings vs Incheon Utd K-League Tips: Saturday May 23 (5.30pm AEST)
Reigning FA Cup champions Suwon were dealt an extremely difficult opening two rounds, coming up against reigning champions Jeonbuk and last season’s runners-up Ulsan. Suwon were right in the game against Jeonbuk before being reduced to 10 men and conceding in the last five minutes to fall 1-0 to Jeonbuk, while they let slip of a 2-0 lead last week against Ulsan to go down 3-2. Coming up against an Incheon side that haven’t scored a goal in two 0-0 stalemates in the first two games, this is the time for Suwon to register their first win of the season.
Sangju Sangmu vs Gwangju FC K-League Tips: Saturday May 23 (8.00pm AEST)
Gwangju are anchored to the bottom of the table after two games following their promotion last season and have failed to score a goal in defeats to Seongnam and Seoul. It already looks as if they’re going to be battling to survive this season – and even more so if they can’t grab a result here. Sangju were lacklustre in a 4-0 thumping to Ulsan in their opening match, but they bounced back strongly to register an impressive 2-0 victory over Gangwon last week.
Jeonbuk Motors vs Daegu FC K-League Tips: Sunday May 24 (5.30pm AEST)
While they’re are one of just two teams to register a maximum six points from their opening two matches, Jeonbuk have been far from convincing. They needed an extra-man advantage to edge Suwon 1-0 in the last five minutes of Round 1, while they battled their way to a 2-1 home victory over newly-promoted Busan last week, only securing the win in stoppage time. Jeonbuk have been dominating their games, but a lack of killer touch in the final third has let them down. Still, I expect them to scrap their way to another win over Daegu, who haven’t made much of an impact in two draws this season.
Ulsan Hyundai vs Busan IPark K-League Tips: Sunday May 24 (8.00pm AEST)
Ulsan have been the stand-out team of the season so far, banging in seven goals in their 4-0 and 3-2 victories over Sangju and Suwon respectively across their first two games. After being pipped for the title on the final day last season by Jeonbuk, Ulsan look determined to right their wrongs in 2020 and they’ve made the perfect start to the season. Busan were brave against Jeonbuk last week, but they were dominated for most of the game and only got on the scoresheet courtesy of a penalty. At home, I’m expecting a routine win for Ulsan to close out Round 3.
