Matildas vs Denmark Preview & Prediction
The Matildas’ confidence is sky-high as they prepare to face Denmark for a spot in the World Cup quarter-finals on Monday night.
After suffering a shock 3-2 loss to Nigeria, the Matildas were in danger of crashing out of their home World Cup in the group stage, with coach Tony Gustavsson under immense pressure.
However, the Aussies produced a thunderous performance against reigning Olympic champions Canada in their last group stage game, emerging 4-0 winners.
Haley Raso scored a first-half double for the Matildas before Mary Fowler and Steph Catley also found the back of the net to complete the dominant victory.
Now, the Matildas can consider themselves as genuine threats for the World Cup, but they can’t afford to take their foot off the pedal here. Sam Kerr is back training and could start, which would be a huge boost.
Meanwhile, Denmark largely did what was expected of them in the group stage, beating minnows China and Haiti and losing to England to finish second.
It was solid without being spectacular for the Danes, who didn’t really impress too much in 1-0 and 2-0 victories over China and Haiti respectively.
VERDICT:
It looked like the Matildas were feeling the pressure of playing a home World Cup in their first two games, but with their tournament on the line, they played some of their best football to crush Canada, breathing new life into their campaign.
With Kerr possibly returning, they should only get stronger, with Raso and Fowler also performing at a high level. Caitlin Foord also scored a double vs Denmark last year, so this could be the game where the Arsenal star gets going at this World Cup.
The Matildas have won nine of their last 11 games, with eight of those victories accompanied by a clean sheet, while Denmark haven’t looked great throughout the competition so far.
