Matildas vs England Preview & Prediction

It’s arguably the most-anticipated sporting occasion in Australia this century as the Matildas face England in the World Cup semi-finals in Sydney on Wednesday night.

Only the Socceroos attempting to snap a 32-year drought to qualify for the Men’s World Cup in their playoff tie with Uruguay back in 2005 comes close, so wasn’t it fitting how the Matildas advanced to a maiden semi-final against France in a thrilling penalty shootout, bringing back memories of that famous night 18 years ago when John Aloisi and Mark Schwarzer were the heroes.

Now it’s the Matildas time to shine, with goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold forcing four penalty misses from France, while Courtney Vine stepped up as the 10th penalty-taker to secure a famous win and send a nation into euphoric celebrations.

The Matildas have taken their game to another level since the start of the tournament saw them produce shaky performances against Ireland and Nigeria.

Australia went on to cruise past Canada 4-0 and Denmark 2-0 before Saturday’s exhilarating triumph. Sam Kerr looks to have regained full fitness, coming off the bench in the last two fixtures, while Mary Fowler continues to impress in attack and was unlucky not to put the Matildas ahead on various occasions throughout the 90 minutes against France. Fowler also deserves applause for slotting home one of the most thunderous penalties you’re ever likely to see in the shootout.

Meanwhile, England have arguably been the most impressive team over the last couple of years, suffering just one defeat since April 2021 – but, that was against the Matildas earlier this year in London.

England are unbeaten in 35 of their last 36 games in all competitions and are the reigning European champions having conquered the likes of Spain, Sweden and Germany on their way to the silverware.

However, England haven’t looked all that convincing this World Cup – they barely got over the line against the likes of Haiti and Nigeria, but they did lift in order to register a 2-1 victory in the quarter-finals over Colombia.

VERDICT:

The Matildas dare to dream of a historic World Cup victory and they are now just two wins away. With an entire country behind them, the Matildas have all the momentum heading into this semi-final, while England could perhaps be feeling the pressure as favourites and the opportunity to achieve the European/World Cup double.

Think the value lies with the Matildas – they’ve been outstanding against Canada, Denmark and France, who they were unlucky not to beat in 90 minutes. With the home crowd support, the Matildas can edge England and continue their fairytale run into the final.
