Matildas vs France Preview & Prediction

It’s set to be an electric atmosphere at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday as the Matildas look to create history against France and make a World Cup semi-final for the first time.

After a nervous opening two matches against Ireland and Nigeria, the Matildas have surged into top form, crushing Canada 4-0 in a must-win final group game before producing a dominant performance to conquer Denmark 2-0 in the R16.

Caitlin Foord played her best game of the competition as she opened the scoring, while Hayley Raso made it three goals in her last two games by adding a second in the 70th minute to seal the victory.

Sam Kerr also featured for the first time at this World Cup after battling a calf injury, coming on as a substitute in the second-half. The Matildas will likely need Kerr fit and firing if they are to cause the upset and reach the final four.

France, who are ranked No. 5 in FIFA’s rankings, have improved with each match at this World Cup.

The French opened with a 0-0 draw against Jamaica, but now bring a three-game winning streak into the quarter-finals, edging Brazil 2-1 before thumping 6-3 and 4-0 victories over Panama and Morocco.

Ten goals in their last two games means France are gelling fantastically up front, so the Matildas – who conceded three goals to Nigeria – will have to be on guard at the back.

VERDICT:

The Matildas have raised their level significantly over the last two games and if they can ride the home crowd support, they are capable of the upset. The Aussies beat France 1-0 in a warm-up game a few weeks ago and their best football can do the job here.

France will also be nervous considering they are the higher-ranked nation and have been knocked out at this stage in their last two World Cups.

However, our best bet is Over 2.5 goals. France have been scoring for fun lately and there’s a chance they could even run away with this, but the Matildas have also scored six goals in their last two games, so a high-scoring affair looks likely at good odds (Best Over 2.5 total goals odds $2.30 with bet365.)
