Manchester United will be aiming to double down on their confidence-boosting start to the pre-season when they meet Melbourne Victory at the MCG on Friday night.

Erik ten Hag’s tenure at United got off to the perfect start with a crushing 4-0 demolition of Liverpool in Bangkok earlier this week.

Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martical, Fred and Facundo Pellistri all got on the scoresheet, but Ten Hag played down the win, rightfully declaring friendly results don’t carry much weight in the grand scheme of things.

Nevertheless, it was an emphatic performance from United and one that will give renewed hopes to Red Devils fans that their team can challenge for the Premier League this upcoming season.

Man United finished sixth in last season’s EPL and were never in the title hunt, but Ten Hag’s arrival is a promising step for a club desperate to get back to their glory days.

Interestingly, Melbourne Victory announced the signing of former United winger Nani earlier in the week, with the Portuguese star a chance to make a late cameo off the bench.

Victory had a successful A-League season after finishing with the wooden spoon last campaign, with Tony Popovic guiding his team to third spot on the ladder.

Victory haven’t played since a disappointing 4-1 exit in the semi-finals, but will obviously be motivated for the chance to have a crack at United.

VERDICT:

Friendly games can go either way, but United will want to continue their winning momentum from thumping Liverpool and they should be able to get the better of Victory, who are in their off-season from the A-League.
