Socceroos vs Bangladesh Preview & Prediction
One year on from their best World Cup finish in history, the Socceroos embark on the road to USA, Canada & Mexico as their 2026 qualifying campaign begins with a home game against Bangladesh in Melbourne on Thursday night.
Unsurprisingly, the Socceroos are overwhelming favourites to pick up three points against a Bangladesh team ranked 183 in the world. For context, there are 207 in the FIFA rankings.
Australia have played against some big nations since their superb showing at Qatar 2022, where they defeated Denmark and Tunisia before falling to eventual champions Argentina 2-1 in the R16.
The Socceroos claimed a win over Ecuador at home, went down to Argentina again in China and picked up a 2-2 draw on the road to Mexico. Graham Arnold’s side also impressed in a tight 1-0 loss at Wembley against England last month.
Arnold is mostly sticking with the players used in those friendlies and from the 2022 World Cup, but there is a potential debut on the cards for Portsmouth striker Kusini Yengi, who has been in great form since joining from the Western Sydney Wanderers.
One player to look out for will be Jamie Maclaren – the Melbourne City forward is playing at home in AAMI Park and will obviously be fresh from not having to travel, while he is also coming off a brace on the weekend in the A-League against Macarthur.
Bangladesh obviously aren’t expected to offer much here and will be hoping for an improvement to their 5-0 and 4-0 defeats suffered during the 2015 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Bangladesh advanced into the qualifying campaign courtesy of edging the Maldives over two legs last month.
VERDICT:
Anything other than a dominant Socceroos win would be shocking. Great chance for plenty of players to find the back of the net for their country against one of the weakest nations they will ever face.
