Australia vs Ecuador Preview & Prediction

A new era dawns on the Socceroos as the team play their first match since a successful World Cup campaign when they meet Ecuador at CommBank Stadium on Friday night.

The Socceroos surprised everyone to reach the Round of 16 in Qatar, earning victories over Denmark and Tunisia, losing only to eventual finalists Argentina and France.

Graham Arnold has been rewarded with a new deal and he’s opted for a blend of youth and experience in this new-look squad.

Injuries mean Mat Leckie, Aaron Mooy, Ajdin Hrustic, Jamie Maclaren and Martin Boyle are missing, but that’s opened up opportunities for the likes of possible debutants in Jordon Bos, Aidan O’Neill, Alexander Robertson, Joe Gauci and 17-year-old sensation Nestory Irankunda.

Irankunda has been lighting up the A-League and is tipped for a move to Europe over the course of the next year. He’s been included as a train-on player and is likely to receive some game time in the second fixture next week.

There’s also plenty of intrigue surrounding midfielder Robertson, who has been training with the Man City first team, alongside the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne.

Jason Cummings will be hoping for some game time after scoring 12 goals since the World Cup and he could reunite with former Mariners teammate Garang Kuol, who is back in the Socceroos setup after almost scoring a late goal against Argentina at the World Cup.

Kuol will be aiming to restore some confidence after a difficult start to life in Europe with Scottish club Hearts. Craig Goodwin was one of the Socceroos’ best in Qatar and has been excellent for Adelaide United in the A-League, so keep an eye on the winger for a big game here.

Ecuador meanwhile failed to make it out of their group at the World Cup after losing 2-1 to Senegal in their final game.

It was a disappointing tournament for Ecuador, who started with a 2-0 win over hosts Qatar and a 1-1 draw with Netherlands, but they couldn’t lift when it mattered most.

Interestingly, Ecuador have now employed former Qatar manager Felix Sanchez as the man to take the nation forward through to 2026.

Ecuador captain Enner Valencia is the man to watch – he’s scored in eight of his last 10 appearances for Fenerbahce in the Turkish Super League, while he also fired home three goals at the World Cup.

VERDICT:

Tough game to predict as both nations play their first game since the World Cup.

We can see a draw playing out as both teams find their feet in this first game, while Under 2.5 goals looks good for our best bet. Ecuador have seen Under 2.5 goals in 14 of their last 16 games in all competitions, while the Socceroos have gone under in five of their last seven (Best Under 2.5 goals odds $1.66 with Picklebet.)
