Socceroos vs New Zealand Preview & Prediction

Centenary celebrations will be in full swing in Brisbane on Thursday night as the Socceroos and New Zealand renew their Trans-Tasman rivalry in the first of two friendlies at Suncorp.

The Socceroos are warming up for the World Cup in November after securing qualification with a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Peru back in June.

Graham Arnold has named a big squad for these two games against the Kiwis, with the more experienced players tipped to get a run in this clash before departing back to Europe to link up again with their respective clubs across the continent.

The younger and Australian-based players then should get a chance in the second game next week in New Zealand.

It’s a good chance for players such as Awer Mabil and Ajdin Hrustic to get some much-needed game time – Mabil is struggling to get a look-in at Cadiz after requesting a late transfer away from the La Liga battlers, while Hrustic is still getting adjusted to life in the Serie A with Verona after falling out of favour with Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt, despite scoring a crucial penalty in the final against Rangers.

Aaron Mooy and Martin Boyle are both having good seasons in Scotland with Celtic and Hibs respectively, with Boyle scoring in three games so far. However, there’s no room for Tom Rogic, who went missing for the final stages of Australia’s qualifying campaign and recently signed for West Brom in the English Championship.

Adam Taggart, who is based in Japan with Cerezo Osaka, could get the nod up front after recovering from a series of niggling injury problems. Central Coast Mariners duo Jason Cummings and Garang Kuol should get their Socceroos’ debut at some stage across the two games.

VERDICT:

The Socceroos have been largely dominant when playing as favourites at home over the last few years, winning 14 of 17 such games, drawing the other three.

New Zealand have a few solid players in their ranks, highlighted by Newcastle United striker Chris Wood, but they are a class below and due appear to be struggling in attack, failing to score in their last three games after missing out on World Cup qualification with a loss to Costa Rica.

Australia probably won’t set the world on fire here, but at home they should get the job done before jetting across the ditch for next week’s return fixture.
