Argentina vs Australia Preview & Prediction
Can the Socceroos’ dream World Cup run continue into unprecedented areas when they square off against Lionel Messi and Argentina on Sunday morning (AEDT)?
Graham Arnold and his Australian side have defied the odds after being written off by almost everyone pre-tournament to reach the R16 for just the second time in history, emulating the feat of the 2006 Golden Generation.
That World Cup in Germany ended in heartbreak after Italy were awarded a penalty in the final minute, with Fabio Grosso going down controversially under the challenge of Lucas Neill. Francesco Totti stepped up to fire home from the spot and send Australia home.
Sixteen years later and the Socceroos have another chance at more history. This Australian team have already etched their names into the record books after winning two games in the group stage over Tunisia and Denmark, something never done before in this country.
Mitch Duke was the hero against Tunisia as his header handed the Socceroos their first World Cup victory since 2010, while Mathew Leckie produced a stunning goal on the counter to fire home past Denmark for back-to-back 1-0 victories.
It ended up being a crucial strike after Tunisia took the lead against France moments before and ultimately prevailed against the defending champions.
Arnold has galvanised this team and their togetherness, fighting spirit and determination to succeed is almost unparalleled.
Victory is a state of mind.

Harry Souttar has officially announced himself on the world stage with some herculean performances that have reportedly already attracted interest from multiple Premier League clubs.
Aaron Mooy has a new lease on life, Jackson Irvine is holding down the fort in the middle, Riley McGree continues to prove he’s a big game player – providing the assist for Leckie – and Mat Ryan is on fire, proving the doubters wrong after being demoted to the bench for club side FC Copenhagen.
This group of players have risen to every challenge so far in Qatar, but how will they fare against an Argentina side who have gone unbeaten in 38 of their last 39 games.
Argentina have been almost unbeatable over the last couple of years, with a freak loss to Saudi Arabia in their tournament opener their only blemish. The Saudis fired home some stunning goals in the moments after half-time to shock the reigning Copa America champions.
However, Argentina bounced back strongly in their next two matches, conquering Mexico and Poland by 2-0 scores to emerge top of Group C and set up this R16 showdown with the Socceroos.
Messi, who is playing in his last World Cup, missed a penalty against Poland, but responded brilliantly with a sensational performance to lead his team to the knockout stages.
VERDICT:
Defensively, Argentina are rock solid. They’ve kept a clean sheet in seven of their last eight games, while only three nations have scored against them in their last 18 matches.
Can the Socceroos add their name to that list? As much as it pains us to say it, most likely not. While it’s encouraging Australia have managed three goals from open play in their three matches in Qatar, they still aren’t exactly what you’d call a free-flowing attacking unit. Leckie’s individual brilliance accounted for Craig Goodwin’s goal against France and the winner against Denmark, while Mitch Duke used great anticipation to head home a deflected Goodwin cross against Tunisia.
We’re expecting the Socceroos to fight until the very last second, but Argentina’s overall firepower and superior class should propel them through to the quarter-finals (Best Argentina win to nil odds $1.61 with bet365.)
