Australia vs Peru Preview & Prediction

Australia has had a shaky path towards their goal of making the 2022 World Cup, and it was no different in their do-or-die clash with the United Arab Emirates last time out. A cagey opening 45 resulted in a dull first half, but as Graham Arnold decided to push the full-backs up, the game opened up and Australia looked dominant.

The Socceroos will be keen to avenge their 2018 World Cup defeat in the only previous meeting between the two nations even if both sides have changed drastically since then. Australian’s love an underdog status, which will suit the green and gold in the early hours of Tuesday morning as the nation hope to repeat their heroics in their previous World Cup Qualifiers Finals.

Australia have also been dealt a major blow heading into this contest, with star midfielder Tom Rogic – one of the only players in this Socceroos team that is genuinely world class – announcing he would be missing the playoffs due to ‘personal reasons’.

Meanwhile, Peru will be looking to qualify for their second consecutive World Cup after ending a run of eight missed World Cups in 2018. They haven’t tested themselves in the tough Qatari conditions, which can be seen as benefit for the Australians, who have been in the host country for two weeks.

Although they will have the advantage of not having to play a continental playoff like Australia, but did play a friendly against New Zealand a week ago. They were rather lacklustre in that contest, only managing just one shot on target for the match. However, they were clinical as Benevento striker Gianluca Lapadula gave them the lead in the second half.

VERDICT:

It does promise to be a tight low-scoring affair – Australia struggle to score goals and Peru have seen under 2.5 goals in their last five straight games. (Best Under 2.5 goals odds $1.61 with bet365.)
