England vs France Preview & Prediction

England continue their quest for a first major international trophy since 1966 when they come up against France in the World Cup quarter-finals on Sunday morning AEDT.

It’s been a solid tournament for England, but this is where the action really heats up. The Three Lions made the semi-finals of Russia 2018 and were runners-up at the Euros, so they have proven they can clear this stage at recent events.

However, no nation is under as much pressure as England to finally deliver another international trophy and they’ve got a red-hot French side to contend with here.

England have scored 12 goals in their four games, including three against Senegal in the R16, but this is obviously their first true test of the competition.

France have been on fire and are looking strong to become the first country to win back-to-back World Cups since 1962.

Didier Deschamps’ side have won three of their four games and had the luxury of resting most of their players for the final group match with Tunisia.

France deployed all of their superstars for the R16 showdown with Poland and ran away comfortable 3-1 winners, conceding a penalty in the last minute.

Kylian Mbappe has been the player of the tournament so far, banging in five goals from three games – and they’ve all been quality strikes.

Even without the likes of Karim Benzema, N’golo Kante and Paul Pogba, this French side have looked insanely good and there’s no reason to believe they can’t go all the way if they maintain their current level.

VERDICT:

England have been playing their best and most consistent football in a long time over the last four years, but it all comes down to this moment – and they have a long history of buckling under pressure.

England have faltered against elite teams this season, failing to beat the likes of Italy and Germany in the Nations League, so this is obviously a huge challenge. France have looked in sublime form and if Mbappe keeps up his current form, he’s virtually unstoppable.

Backing France to prevail, but England have the firepower to get on the scoresheet (Best France win H2H odds $2.40 with bet365.)
