Japan have been the surprise package of the tournament so far, topping a group that had Spain and Germany involved. In fact, both of their wins the group stage came against those two footballing powerhouses. They will need to repeat those feats on the Round of 16 against previous World Cup finalists Croatia.

They will enter this match as the underdogs, which is likely to work in their favour. It will be interesting to see how the grit of Croatia match-up against the quick, low-centre of gravity passing from the Japanese. This is the first time they have reached back-to-back Round of 16 appearances in their history.

Elsewhere, Croatia finished second in their group despite not losing a single match, with two draws against Belgium & Morocco, and a dominant 4-1 triumph against Canada. Yet again, this is a match they should be winning, but something they have struggled with as favourites recently.

However, they have been one of the strongest defensive sides of the tournament thus far, conceding just one goal (4-1 vs Canada). If they can maintain that record against a Japan side that has conceded in every match of the tournament than they will be on the right path of reaching the Quarter-finals. 

VERDICT:

Japan have managed to pull off some major scalps in this tournament so far, and I don’t see why they can’t do it again. Although I do see the match going to extra time. (Best under total goals odds @$1.61 with bet365.)
