Morocco vs Portugal Preview & Prediction

History is on the line in more ways than one as Morocco square off against Portugal for a place in the World Cup semi-finals on Sunday morning AEDT.

Morocco are competing in their first World Cup quarter-final, also becoming the first Arab nation to reach this stage of the tournament, while they are only the fourth African nation overall to advance to the last eight.

Now, Morocco have the opportunity to become the first African country to progress to the semi-finals after their stirring triumph over Spain in the R16.

Morocco absorbed Spain’s possession-based football and struck when it mattered most in the penalty shootout, keeping another clean sheet in the process. Morocco have conceded just one goal in their last eight outings, winning six of those games.

Meanwhile, Portugal produced a statement victory in the R16, absolutely crushing Switzerland 6-1 to make their World Cup intentions crystal clear.

Fernando Santos made the decision to bench controversial star Cristiano Ronaldo and it was fully vindicated, with replacement striker Gonzalo Ramos netting a stunning hat-trick.

The 21-year-old Ramos became the first player to score a hat-trick on his World Cup debut since Miroslav Klose in 2002.

VERDICT:

Morocco have enjoyed a dream tournament, but we get the feeling their run comes to an end here. They were chasing shadows for 120 minutes against Spain and they could easily be out on their feet, both physically and mentally for this showdown.

Portugal have immense talent, firepower and depth in all positions and proved they don’t need Ronaldo to succeed, firing six goals past a Switzerland team that are traditionally very tough to break down.

Portugal beat Morocco 1-0 at the 2018 World Cup group stage and they should be able to repeat that triumph to advance into the semi-finals (Best Portugal win H2H odds $1.70 with bet365.)
