Netherlands will be out to play villain and shut down Lionel Messi’s hopes of ever winning a World Cup when they tackle Argentina in the quarter-finals on Saturday morning AEDT.

Argentina came into the World Cup as arguably the form nation on the planet after going 36 games unbeaten, including beating Brazil in the Copa America final.

However, they’ve stumbled their way through to the quarter-finals and it will be very interesting to see how they perform against a true elite side for the first time.

Indeed, Argentina suffered one of the biggest World Cup upsets in history when they went down 2-1 to Saudi Arabia in their tournament opener, and while they’ve bounced back with three straight victories, they’ve been far from convincing.

Argentina were almost stretched to extra-time against Australia in the R16, with goalkeeper Martinez making a last-ditch save to deny Garang Kuol what would have been a famous goal.

Argentina don’t have a great record against Netherlands either, winning just one of the nine previous meetings – and that was the 1978 World Cup final in Argentina.

Netherlands are growing into this tournament and their confidence is sky-high under Louis van Gaal, with the team going unbeaten in their last 19 games since he returned as manager.

With 11 games in charge of the Dutch at the World Cup, van Gaal is undefeated – and he’s won eight of those fixtures. Netherlands have also progressed in their last three World Cup quarter-finals, including under van Gaal in 2014.

Netherlands were impressive in their 3-1 dispatch of USA in the R16, with Memphis Depay scoring his 24th goal in his last 30 appearances for the national side.

VERDICT:

This is a massive danger game for Argentina. Messi is in sensational form, but even he can only carry this team so far. It’s looking like Argentina have slipped back into old habits and are simply waiting for Messi to do something special.

Netherlands are incredibly tough to break down and they are a massive step up in class to what Argentina have faced in Qatar so far.
