This match could well decide who emerges as the winner of Group A as Netherlands and Senegal square off in Doha on Monday.

Netherlands have been one of the form teams in the world over the last couple of years and come into the World Cup unbeaten in their last 15 fixtures dating back to Euro 2020.

After missing out on Russia 2018, Netherlands are back on the world stage and will harbour ambitions of another deep run.

Netherlands have finished third and second in their last two appearances at the World Cup, while they’ve also never been eliminated during the group stage.

With host nation Qatar and Ecuador the other two teams in Group A, the Netherlands look well-placed to continue their unbeaten streak into the knockout phase.

Steven Bergwijn is in good form for Netherlands heading into this clash, scoring eight goals in 14 league games for Ajax, while he’s also scored in two of his last six international games.

Cody Gakpo is also another player to watch – the rising PSV forward has 13 goals for the season in the Eridivisie, while he’s contributed goals in three of his last five international appearances (two goals and one assist).

Meanwhile, Senegal suffered a huge blow in the days before the World Cup, with superstar attacker Sadio Mane ruled out due to right leg injury.

With Mane’s absence, much of the goal-scoring burden will fall onto the shoulders of Ismaila Sarr, who has struck six times for Watford at club level this season.

Senegal are appearing in back-to-back World Cups for the first time in history – they famously beat defending champions France in the tournament opener back in 2022, while they cruelly missed out on the R16 in Russia due to an inferior fair play record to Japan.

Senegal are the reigning African champions and despite Mane missing, they are still a good chance to progress from this group.

VERDICT:

While Senegal can get positive results against Qatar and Ecuador, beating the Netherlands might prove a step too far.
