Novak Djokovic vs Daniil Medvedev Preview & Predictions

A blockbuster final awaits to determine the 2021 Australian Open champion on Sunday night as eight-time winner Djokovic confronts the on-fire Medvedev.

It’s been a roller-coaster tournament for Djokovic, but the Serbian appears to be hitting top form at exactly the right moment after blitzing qualifier Aslan Karatsev in the semi-finals. Earlier, Djokovic was struggling with a mysterious abdominal injury that saw him drop at least a set in matches against Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Milos Raonic and Alexander Zverev.

But Djokovic knows exactly what he has to do at the business end of the Australian Open – he’s never lost in eight finals at Melbourne Park and we can expect the World No. 1 to be operating at the peak of his powers come Sunday night.

However, he will have by far his toughest test of the tournament against Medvedev, who is riding an enormous wave of momentum heading into his first Australian Open final.

Medvedev, who also made the US Open final in 2019, has been the hottest player on tour dating back to November last year and comes into this clash on the back of an extraordinary 20-match winning streak.

Incredibly, 12 of those wins have been against top 10 players. Roger Federer is the only member of the elite group he hasn’t beaten since November and that’s because he’s been out injured.

Apart from a mid-match concentration lapse in the third round against Filip Krajinovic, Medvedev has been flawless in Melbourne and was sensational in straight set wins over Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarters and semis.

It’s shaping as an absolute classic final if both men bring their best to the court. Djokovic is the undisputed King of Melbourne Park with a perfect 8-0 record in Australian Open finals, but Medvedev is the new kid on the block and perhaps the only man who can go toe-to-toe with Djokovic on the backhand side and come out on top at least half the time.

I’m finding it hard to split them, but what I am confident on is that this will be a LONG match. Both men love energy-sapping baseline rallies and will refuse to take a backward step. Medvedev knows he has what it takes to outlast Djokovic – he’s done it three times before, including just a few months ago at the ATP Finals, but he’s never done it over five sets.

At the same time, Medvedev has taken his game to new levels and is certainly ready to lift a major title at Djokovic’s expense. If we’re simply talking this tournament, then Medvedev has been playing the better tennis – but can he produce it when it matters most against the most successful Australian Open champion in history? It’s almost blasphemy to bet against Djokovic at Melbourne Park – and the Serbian was my pre-tournament pick – but Medvedev might just win a battle for the ages on Sunday….
